(English) Montañitas Reimagined: Strives to weave together a new kind of monument, one that like a braid is woven together in three parts: the Blue Ridge Montañtas Festival hosted at The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 621 in Luray Va., a community curriculum. led by Dr. Amy Price Azano, director of The Center For Rural Education at Virginia Tech and a digital album created by the Lua Project, that takes you on a musical journey through Latine Appalachia. These three distinct parts come together to restory the Latine Appalachian Experience.
What are Montañitas? Montañitas is a term of endearment and means ‘little mountains’ in Spanish. These beloved ranges hugging the Shenandoah Valley, the Blue Ridge Mountains and Massanutten, are home to many different families, communities, and cultures. Inspired by the work of Lua Project (Led by Luray native Mexilachiana Estela Díaz Knott), this monument project celebrates these interwoven cultures by reimagining Appalachia as a shared and co-created space with, by, and alongside the Latin American people who have made the Blue Ridge Mountains their home.
Phase 1 Creating the Los Appalachianos Album: Estela and Dave interviewed a number of individuals and families of Latine origin in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. These interviews inspired songs that they have recorded on the ‘Los Appalachianos’ album, dropping on all streaming platforms September 27th.
Phase 2 Planning the Blue Ridge Montañitas Festival: Over the past year, Estela Diaz Knott of the Lua Project, Dr. Amy Price Azano of Virginia Tech’s Center for Rural Education and members of the VFW Comer-Jones post 621 have been planning the Blue Ridge Montañitas Festival. We are excited to celebrate this festival with everyone on September 28th, 2024, from 11am to 7pm. This festival will highlight what we like to call regional Appalachiano music, dance, art, and food from both Appalachian and Latine roots.
Phase 3 Developing the Curriculum: Phase 3 will be lead by Dr. Amy Azano director of the Center For Rural Education at Virginia Tech, using the recorded interviews, Los Appalachianos album, and footage from the Blue Ridge Montañitas Festival. We will develop a curriculum that will be piloted in 4th and 8th grade classrooms in the Shenandoah Valley beginning in the Spring of 2025. Stay tuned for more news as this unfolds.

(Español) Montañitas Reimagined: Se esfuerza por tejer un nuevo tipo de monumento, uno que, como una trenza, se teje en tres partes: el Festival Blue Ridge Montañtas organizado en el VFW Post 621 en Luray Va., un plan de estudios comunitario dirigido por Amy Azano, directora del Centro de Educación Rural de Va.
