Cultural Organizing Work

Cville Sabroso ~ Charlottesville, Virginia’s First Latin American Cultural Festival was established in 2013 by Estela of Lua Project and Fanny Smedile of Sin Barreras. The festival over the years has highlighted the rich cultural traditions of almost every Latin American country through their delicious food, music, dance and so much more. This is a family friendly event hosted every year on the 3rd Saturday of September and brings in around 5000 festival goers throughout the day.

The Charlottesville Dia De Los Muertos Celebration- Hosted at the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville Va. was founded by Estela of Lua Project & Laura Muñoz of Villa Sabrosa dance troupe in 2012. Dia De Los Muertos, observed every year, on November 1st & 2nd, is a beautiful traditional celebration of Mexico, but traditions like it, are celebrated around the world. Over the years, here in Charlottesville, this celebration has evolved to incorporate elements of nature produced by the amazing farmers and landscapes of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We use art, music, dance, and food to honor and celebrate our ancestors & loved ones who have passed on by building them colorful memorial altars where we place photos, momentos, flowers, candles, food, and things that they loved in life to decorate it. Our children help build these altars. Families, individuals, and community members are welcome to participate.
